Macintosh Configuration
After you have configured your mail server according to the
Server Installation Instructions, you are now ready to configure your computer.
NOTE: If you have NOT configured your mail server, please go back and do so. NotifyMail
will NOT work unless your mail server has been configured.
Please make sure that CarbonLib 1.0.4 or higher is installed on your system.
(It can be downloaded from Apple for free.)
- Place the NotifyMail Folder somewhere on your hard drive.
- Make an alias to NotifyMail and place it in the Startup Items of
your System Folder.
OR
Place the NotifyMail Extension in your Extensions Folder.
- Launch NotifyMail (not NotifyMail Extension).
- From the file menu, select Preferences... you will see the
prefences screen.
The preferences are
broken down into 3 sections, Main, Startup, and Advanced.
Main Preferences
- Mail Program: If your email client is listed in the popup menu in the upper left
corner (by default it is set to Eudora), select it.
- Tell email app to check for mail: this option
will instruct your email client to check for mail when new
mail arrives, if your email client is running
- Play Sound: If you select this, NotifyMail will
play a sound when new mail arrives. You can select the sound
to play by choosing it from the Sound to play popup
menu. You will have a choice of all sounds in your System
and the sound(s) that are built into NotifyMail. In addition, you
can choose if NotifyMail should always play the sound or only
if your email program (as specified in Mail Program) is not running.
- Launch: This option lets you run
any file or AppleScript applet when new mail arrives. Click on the "Click to
Select" button to choose the application to launch.
- Automatically check for updates: If checked, NotifyMail will connect
to our update server about once a week and check for a new version. NotifyMail does not
send any information to the server; it simply gets the current version number and
compares it against the version you are running. If an update is available,
you will be able to download it by choosing Update NotifyMail from the Help menu. This
option is only meant as a convenience feature and is not used to track your usage of
NotifyMail
- Flash scroll lock light: If checked and your keyboard has a scroll lock
light, NotifyMail will flash it when new email arrives. In order for the light to
stop flashing, you should bring your email client (as specified in Mail Program) to
the front, click on Reset Count in the Control Strip Module, or click in the
mailbox window if you have installed NotifyMail Window (found in the Extras folder).
- Use Notification Manager: If you select this option,
NotifyMail will use the notification manager to either display a dialog
box or present you with a floating alert with the message that
you have entered in the Text to display
box.
Startup Preferences
- Check mail at startup: If checked, NotifyMail will connect to your POP3 server
when it starts and see if there is any mail in your mailbox. This is convenient if you
do not run your email client all the time or it doesn't check for mail when it starts up.
- POP3Server: Enter the IP address or DNS address of your POP3 server.
- Username: Enter your username for your mail server.
- Password: Enter your password for your mail server. Your password is stored
scrambled in the preferences file. If you have any concerns about the security of your password,
you should not use this option. (NotifyMail stores your password as securely, if not more securely,
than your email client.
- Use APOP Authentication: If your email server requires APOP Authentication, select this option.
Advanced Preferences
- Port: This is the port that NotifyMail
will wait on for mail notification messages. In most cases, you
will not need to change this from the default of 79.
- Laptop Support: Use this option if you are using NotifyMail
on a laptop. NotifyMail will only be active when you are connected via
Ethernet. However, in order for NotifyMail to know that you are connected, you
must check for email, open a website, or do some other action that connects your
computer to the network.
- When finished selecting your preferences, click OK.
- If you installed the NotifyMail Extension, restart your computer.
- You'll now be instantly notified of new email!
- Once NotifyMail is running, do not quit the application or you
will no longer be notified of new email.
